Neurostimulation

Neurostimulation is the application of electrical energy to nerves to elicit a response or to deliver a therapy. Examples of neurostimulation include activation of motor nerves to move a muscle, sensory nerves to restore a sensation such as sight or hearing, or central nerves such as the spinal cord or brain to treat pain or movement disorders.

ImThera's implantable neurostimulator is designed to stimulate the motor nerves going to the tongue muscles which helps to move the tongue and surrounding tissues to positions that open the airway during breathing. The neurostimulator is a small battery powered device that is implanted under the skin and is programmed by a physician to meet the unique requirements for each patient. The patient is able to recharge and control the implanted stimulator with a simple hand-held device.
